Police arrest 5 vigilante members over murder of a boy

The police in Zaria have arrested five members of the Kaduna State Vigilante Service (KADVIS) over the death of a 17-year-old boy at their office in Kofar Doka. Spokesperson of the Kaduna State police command, ASP Muhammad Jalige, who confirmed this to Arewa Trust Weekly, said the suspects would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as soon as investigation was complete. Those arrested, according to the police, include the chairman of the group, Abubakar Ibrahim, and four others, who were said to have been involved in the torture of Muhammadu Sani Aliyu to death in their attempt to establish whether he stole a mobile phone belonging to one Auwalu Mahauci. Auwalu Mahauci, according to the mother of the deceased, Malama Hannatu Sani Aliyu, reported to Sani’s father, Malam Sani Aliyu, that his mobile phone was missing and he suspected Sani for the theft. Sani’s father and his friend, Malam Abubakar Umar Dan Bakano, interrogated the deceased, who stood his ground that he did not steal the phone. Malama Hannatu explained: “While my son was being interrogated by his father and Malam Dan Bakano, the members came and took him to their office at Kofar Doka where he was tortured to death. The incident happened on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. My son, his father and Auwalu Mahauci (the owner of the missing phone) are working at the same place (a garage) where the alleged theft took place.” She appealed for justice to cut the excesses of vigilante groups, adding that, “even if the boy stole the phone, he did not deserve to die because of handset. However, I know my son is not a thief. Recently, a lady lost her money; he found it and returned the money to her. Can a thief do that?”
